The Big River Rivalry is a high school football all-star game pitting the top players from north of the James River against the best that the south of the river has to offer. Players from every high school, public and private, in the Richmond "All-Metro" area are eligible to compete. The game has been a major success for the past two years, providing both an excellent showcase for many of our local players, as well as an opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause.
The inaugural event saw the North prevail over the South 35-34 in front of a packed house at Randolph-Macon's Day Field, as Cedric Bridges of John Marshall blocked a last-second field goal that would have won the game for the South. The media coverage of the game was terrific, with reports by VirginiaPreps, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and all of the local television stations. Sportsradio 910 WRNL also broadcast the thrilling game live.
The 2014 event was also a classic, with the North edging the South by a single point for the second consecutive year. The 28-27 victory by the North came on the strength of Armstrong quarterback Dashaun Waller's 202 yards of total offense. Like its predecessor, the second-annual Big River Rivalry received excellent coverage, including VirginiaPreps, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, and local television. WRNL did another excellent job of broadcasting the game live in the Richmond area.
In 2015, the South prevailed for the first time, holding the North scoreless in the second half to secure a 26-10 victory. The North got payback in 2016, as Juwan Carter and company rolled to a 59-14 win, the North's third victory in four tries. The South bounced back to win the 2017 Big River Rivalry by a score of 36-16 behind 154 receiving yards from Jaewan "Tink" Boyd. In 2018, the North topped the South 25-13, bolstered by a pair of Zach-Lass-to-A.J.-Wells touchdowns.
